Jamaica Arise: The 75 Year History of the PNP

What was the role that the (PNP) played in the anti-colonial struggle?

The People's National Party (PNP) played a democratic and a mediator role in the anti-colonial struggle. It helped to fight against the oppressive system, and also the unfairness of the colonizers to the Jamaicans and the Negros, who were treated likes slaves, and in best cases had to work inhumanly to get some money in order to live.

I think that it is also important to add, that the PNP remains until today as a model of search for equality and democratic rights.

What was/is the role of women throughout the 75 years of the PNP?

The women have a stronger role and representation throughout the 75 years of the PNP, resulting in the creation of the PNP women's movement. In this period, there where stabilized two of the most important statutes, the Equal Pay for Men and Women Act, and also the Maternity Leave Act.

How did the implementation of democratic socialism affect the Jamaican people?

This implementation affected the Jamaican people by making them seems like a communist country to the eyes of the Capitalistic band, in the context of the cold war. This meant to them the setting of an economic embargo ,ending in economic difficulties for the Jamaican people.

How does the PNP justify privatization and its role in creating a path of neoliberal reforms in Jamaica?

They justified privatization as  a way to fight against the world economic crisis, explaining that with this measures they wanted to end with the inflation and the devaluation of the Jamaican dollar.

How do you compare the role of PNP in the film, Ghett'a Life (Lenny Thompson, Derrick's Father) versus the documentary?

In the documentary the PNP is portrayed as something totally positive that always end up helping the Jamaican people. On the other hand, in the movie Ghett'a Life we can see how this party is portrayed as something made to please people, and that occasionally could hurt them and pass over their needs.

The Pain Tree by Olive Senior

1- Who is your favorite character from the story and what kind of background do they come from? Why? (Use examples from Michelle Cliff's essay, If I Could Write This in Fire, I Would Write This in Fire) I think my favorite character from the story is Lorraine because I really like how she develops real feelings for Larissa, although of the difference that exists between their social classes. In the story, Lorraine comes from a white-light skinned middle-class, and Larissa work for their family as a maid. This text reminds me of Michelle's Cliffs essay, because it talks about how Jamaican maids live for the people they serve, and also clearly shows the class divisions between the oppressor and the working Jamaican class. 2- Why do you think Lorraine’s mother mocks the worke...

The Harder They Come Film Review

1. In general, what did you like and dislike about the film? I really enjoyed this movie, especially because of the social commentary it makes of the Jamaican situation at that time, in which we can see a representation of the social injustice in Jamaica. Despite what I said before, I think there are some technical aspects that could have been improved in the film. I Know this is a guerrilla movie, but even though this fact, I think they could have made a better camera work.   2. Who is your favorite character from the film? My favorite character from the film is Ivan Martin. I think he is an antihero who represents in a perfect way, the violence of which the Jamaican people were submitted to at that time. Ivan has to be violent in this environment, in order to survive and achieve his dreams. His situation is just like the Jamaican people who had to fight for their rights at that time.  3. Would you recommend this film to someo...
